Top of the hospitality industry The Wooden Spoon Cafe in Richmond and Neil Ward from The Cellar Door Restaurant and Cafe at Waimea Estates were the Tasman district’s top performers at the New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards, held at the Rutherford Hotel in Nelson on Monday night. Neil was voted as the Best Head Chef while The Wooden Spoon won the Best Cafe category at the awards which are held every two years to recognise the Nelson-Tasman region’s top restaurants, bars, baristas and chefs. The winners are decided by a panel of judges and public voting, and The Wooden Spoon’s owners Craig and Nicky Woodbury say their win is a reflection of the loyalty of their customers. “Our customers tell us every day that they like our cafe and so we are really pleased they showed their support by voting for us,” Nicky says. Best Bar went to the Speight’s Ale House, which also won the Best Entertainment category and the Top Ambience and Service award. One of its bartenders, Riley Burrows, won the Best Bar Person award. Other major awards included: Noel Young from Sublime, Best Barista; Jester House, Best Suburban Venue; Pizza Bar, Best Host Responsibility; The Styx, Best Beverage List; Nemo Nepe, Best Door Person; Mediterranean Foods, Best Supplier; Chris Harding from Bidvest, Best Sales Representative. Around 300 people turned out for the awards.

A former Waimea College student played a key role for the Royal New Zealand Air Force in its latest international operation, Exercise Pitch Black, in Australia's Northern Territory. Flying officer Josh Wood has been providing logistic support for Exercise Pitch Black which is the Royal Australian Air Force’s largest multi-national combat air training exercise this year. It involved armed forces from New Zealand, United States, Singapore, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and New Caledonia and ended last Friday. Josh got his first taste for the air force when he was at Waimea College and was selected to attend a RNZAF challenge week in Ohakea. He later signed up for the air force's undergraduate scheme and, after completing a Bachelor of Commerce at Canterbury University, graduated top of the air force's initial officer training course with the Sword of Honour.

Josh was subsequently posted to Woodbourne in Blenheim where he is a Flight Commander of the Logistics Squadron. A year later, Josh was working in the heat of the Northern Territory providing logistic support to a multi-national force of over 2000 personnel involved in Exercise Pitch Black. The three-week exercise aimed to foster multi-national partnerships and co-operation between military forces from six nations. It involved a combination of day and night flying and gave New Zealand Defence Forces an opportunity to practise deployment and integration of ground support personnel with other countries. Josh will return to his Woodbourne base in late August and immediately begin preparing for an eight week logistics course at the Devonport Naval Base. He will end the year competing in a services tournament against the Australian Defence Force squash team.

New Zealand’s champion brewer Martin Townshend has come a long way since he made his first beer. Last Thursday, Martin’s Upper Moutere-based brewery was named New Zealand’s Champion Brewery at the Brewers’ Guild of New Zealand Beer Awards in Wellington. Townshend Brewery won an incredible 12 medals, including five golds, as well as the Champion New Zealand Manufacturer trophy and the New Zealand Specific Style category for his Oldham’s Tap Riwaka Pilsner. Martin’s one-man operation showed that big is not necessarily good as he outclassed some of the giants of New Zealand brewing including DB and Lion. But Martin admits he has learned a lot since his first venture into the world of beer brewing back in 1994. “I was working on an orchard at Mariri with a South African and Swede and we started brewing beer for all the pickers around the area. We brewed 60 litres of home brew every six days and had these great parties - the beer was terrible but it was cheap.” These days Martin’s operation is far more sophisticated with all the latest equipment that

After 10 years of commercial brewing, Martin has also gained the experience and confidence required to consistently produce top quality beers. “There’s a lot of science in brewing but I also like to think there’s more to it than that. Sometimes I get this inspiration for a beer - I just know what is going to work.” Although Townshend Brewery’s already excellent reputation has been enhanced by last week’s big win, Martin says being a commercial brewer is not all beer and skittles. He’s worked hard to expand his

brewery from the small six by three metre shed he built at the back of his house in 2004, estimating that he bottled close to 250,000 beers by hand before allowing himself the luxury of buying a $135,000 bottling plant. Townshend Brewery’s won gold medals for its Flemish Stout, Black Strap Porter, Kings Landing Scotch Ale, Oldham’s Tap Riwaka Pilsner (with Liberty Brewery) and Tiebreak Summer Ale (with 666 Brewing). Nelson’s McCashin’s Brewery also won gold for its Stoke Recognition Rich Porter while Sprig & Fern won gold for its Harvest Pilsner.

NEWS in brief MAN CHARGED FOR THEFT: Police are making good progress investigating the theft of a motorcycle from Morley Motorcycle and Marine in Wakatu Estate in June, after last week charging a 35-yearold Nelson man with burglary. Thieves stole the $6500 motorcycle after gaining entry to Morley’s by removing a shop front window on June 27. Last week, police found the motorcycle at a Christchurch address and charged a Christchurch man with receiving stolen property. Police spokesperson Barbara Dunn says they subsequently charged the Nelson man with theft of the motorcycle. The man was due to appear in the Nelson District Court on Monday - the investigation is continuing and further charges could be laid. HIP HOP DANCE CHAMPS: In its fifth year anniversary, Shakedown Hip hop dance champs has its biggest line up yet, with crews from throughout New Zealand coming to Nelson to compete. editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Being a taxi driver, Peter Combes hears plenty of great yarns. But having just retired after 43 years in the same job, it’s fair to say he’s got plenty of his own to tell too. When he first started at Nelson Taxis the industry was regulated and the Government restricted the number of taxis in each area. There were 27 in Nelson, one in Stoke and three in Richmond. Nowadays there are more than double that. There were some funny rules, like if you drove into town you’d have to stay there until you received another job that took you out of town. “You couldn’t drive out of town empty, but now you ring for a taxi and you can ask for anyone’s number to come get you,” he explains. Peter — who lives in a motorhome and is already planning to spend most of his retirement fishing — is a reserved man. But even he chirps up when he recalls the story of his longest fare. “I started at six in the morning. Some seamen got in touch with me at midday to go to Lyttelton. They used to fly them but the weather was bad so they’d pay for them to catch a taxi. I got there to Lyttelton, they were catching a ferry, and as they got out, another guy yells out from up on the boat ‘is that a Nelson taxi? Tell him to wait for about five minutes’. I waited and next thing this guy comes running down

Nobody else has ever done that. That would cost you a couple of grand now.” Another successful fare was when a bus arrived late at night and all 15 people on board wanted to go to Motueka, so Peter got three trips out of it. “The third lot had walked almost to Richmond by the time I got back to them.” But he’s had his fair share of runners and other bizarre experiences too. “There were two guys who wanted to go to Richmond and they were whispering to each other, so I knew what was going to happen. We got to the corner where Raeward Fresh is now and they said ‘oh this will do us’, and the guy at the back grabbed the door and ran out. The guy in the front did it too, but I grabbed him

at the same time. I said ‘you’re not going anywhere’, and then he tells me he’s got no money. But I said ‘I don’t care, I’m not letting you out.’ I held on to him and went after the other guy. I stuck my head out the window and said ‘you can pick your mate up from the police station’. He came across with the money then.” Peter — who worked the airport route — liked being a taxi driver because “you can work whatever hours you want”. “I just love fishing and I always wanted to go away in the weekends, but that’s when the big money comes in.” But Peter won’t have anything stopping him from putting his feet up and relaxing now that he’s retired. “I usually go to the Coast for the whitebait and down the Sounds for the scallops. I missed the work to start with, but not now.”

ACC pays Waimea Old Boys bring back Buck out $26m to Tasman Fruit growers, carpenters, joiners and livestock producers have had the most work-related accidents in the past 12 months, according to an ACC injury comparison report which says it paid out more than $26 million to Tasman residents during the year. The annual report, which accounts for the 2012/13 financial year, was released last week and includes statistics on the total number of claims, how much was paid out, and which occupations and sports caused the most injuries across 72 different territorial authorities in New Zealand. From the 72, Nelson City is ranked 28th in terms of the most injury-prone, with Tasman in 48th position. If it was separated by region, Nelson City would the most injury-prone and Tasman the least, but unlike most other regions in New Zealand, they are not comprised of a number of smaller territorial authorities which can average out the injury rate. In Tasman, where fruit growers, carpenters, joiners and livestock producers made the most work-related claims, a total of $26,021,239 was paid out in 2012/13. The number of claims was 18,044 and the claims rate per 10,000 of the population was just 3712. Those statistics were up from the 17,646 claims made the year prior, when $25,743,521 was paid out. ACC paid out $23,674,005 to Nelson residents, with 19,062 claims made. The claims rate per 10,000 of the population was 4073. In total, 104,045 days of productivity were lost. Those statistics are up very slightly from 2011/12 when 19,030 claims totalled a pay-out of $22,859,252. When comparing the type of injuries reported in both Nelson and Tasman, ACC says one of the major factors is the population demographic. Nelson, with an older population, exceeds the national average injury rate in two areas; falls and water sport related injuries, while Tasman exceeds the national average in work and water sport related injuries. When compared to the other areas in New Zealand, Tasman ranks 27th in terms of the most work-related injuries, with Nelson well down the list in 62nd. Nelson has more assault-related injuries, ranking in 28th place, with Tasman back in 63rd position. Rugby union, cycling and football were the three sports that resulted in the most claims.

All Black legend Buck Shelford will be a big attraction at the Waimea Old Boys cabaret and prizegiving, which is to be held at the clubrooms next Saturday night. Crackdown on boy racers

A recent operation targeting irresponsible drivers and modified vehicles saw five cars impounded. The operation, held over two evenings, also resulted in five people having their driver’s licence suspended and one vehicle being “green stickered” for being unsafe to be on the road. Another was “blue stickered”, requiring the owner to update registration details. Two people were detected with excess breath alcohol. Both recorded more than twice the legal breath alcohol limit.

Feeding 600 guests in style Transforming Saxton Stadium into a lavish dining room and catering for almost 600 guests attending a prestigious national awards function might seem like a big ask but Petite Fleur not only helped achieve it - they did it in style. The Fulton Hogan Excellence Awards were held at Saxton Stadium on July 21 in conjunction with the Local Government of New Zealand annual conference held in Nelson. Saxton Stadium was selected as the venue for the awards function and Horst Wellmeyer and Justine Robertson of Petite Fleur were contracted to cater for 585 guests in the form of a three course set menu and wine match. It was easily the biggest assignment Petite Fleur has undertaken since starting their restaurant and catering business based at Seifried Estate in 2008. Petite Fleur had catered for up to 350 guests at Seifried Estate and Horst had previously catered for up to 2000 people working as a chef in the Middle East and Asia, but he says the Fulton Hogan Awards presented a unique set of challenges. "We are used to having enough staff at our disposal for functions but for a big, one-off event like the one at Saxton Stadium we had to recruit a lot of help," Horst says. "Catering for an off-site event also meant we had to prepare the food here at the restaurant and transport it to the venue - it was a major logistical undertaking."

Justine says they resolved the staffing issue by training 60 students from Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls as their wait staff for the function. The students received a reference from Petite Fleur as well as a discounted ticket for their school ball, which was held at Petite Fleur at Seifried Estate. Petite Fleur also had a dedicated band of about 58 friends and family helping their regular staff to look after the drinks and food. "We had 110 people and most of them were inexperienced so we had briefings and a dress rehearsal the night before," Justine says. "There was a lot of preparation and they were under pressure

because there was only 50 minutes between courses but it went really well on the night." Horst says all the food was prepared at Petite Fleur's restaurant before transporting it to Saxton Stadium on the night. "It was a big day. We started at eight in the morning and didn't finish until two or three in the morning," he says. The pavilion was decorated by Christchurch company Event Impressions and Horst says the Cinderella-like transformation was amazing. "It was a really good team effort by everyone and it just goes to show that the region can pull together such a fantastic event."

400 volunteer for Daffodil Day

Kahurangi National Park Rat and Possum Control Operation As part of its national Battle for our Birds programme, the Department of Conservation (DOC) is undertaking aerial pest control to protect native species from beech mast predator plagues that could decimate their numbers. The pest control will also target possums.

Description of the area.

Approximately 270,000 ha Kahurangi National Park and other Conservation managed land between the Owen Valley in the south to Parapara Peak/Kahurangi Point in the north. The operation extends from western boundary at the coastline north from Kohaihai to the Wangapeka River boundary /Mt Arthur Range in the east. Major areas include (but not limited to): Heaphy Track; Wangapeka Track; Mt Owen; Cobb Valley and part of the Mt Arthur Tablelands.

Method of control

Cereal baits containing the pesticide 1080 will be distributed by helicopter over the above area. The 1080 baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2-3 cm long, cinnamon-lured and dyed green. The 1080 operation will be preceded by an application of non-toxic prefeed baits. The non-toxic prefeed baits are 2 cm long and not dyed.

Always remember when in the area:

• DO NOT touch bait or bait bags • WATCH CHILDREN at all times • DO NOT eat animals from this area • DO NOT allow DOGS access to animal carcasses Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at the public access ways in the above area. All public walking tracks within the area will be closed during and immediately following the 1080 operation until a track inspection is completed. Warning signs will be placed at all normal points of entry to the area and at huts within the area immediately prior to the 1080 operation.

Commencement Date

The operation will commence with a single application of non-toxic prefeed baits on or after 1 September 2014. The application of 1080 bait will follow at least five days later. The area is divided in five operational blocks which may be treated at different times. The actual date of all parts of the operation will depend on the availability of periods of suitable weather. Over 400 volunteers from around the region will be helping out with the Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Day appeal, which hits the streets this Friday. Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s biggest fundraising event of the year, and last year volunteers helped raised more than $87,000 for the Nelson Centre. The appeal’s principal sponsor, ANZ Bank, has already held a quiz night last week and pre-ordered daffodils will be delivered to 147 businesses around the region on Wednesday but it’s Friday’s street appeal that will be the biggest challenge for the army of volunteers. “We have 400-plus volunteers in the Nelson and Tasman regions who do a wonderful job,” centre manager Linda Lucre says. “They pick daffodils, deliver posters, put windmills together, bunch-up daffodils for the orders and collect on the day and many other jobs.” Linda says the daffodils for Friday’s appeal will be picked from properties in Wakefield, Redwood Valley and Motueka. They will be sold at stalls throughout the region including Murchison, Wakefield, Brightwater, Richmond, Stoke

Students show off their talents Appleby School’s talented singers and dancers have been trying to show they have the X-factor as they audition for a place on stage at the school’s annual Country Fair. The fair has previously featured performances from the school’s Jump Jam and Rock Da House groups as part of the live entertainment. But this year the school has been holding a talent quest to find the top acts to perform at the fair and so far the judges Alison Hart, Jenny Austin and Jodie Brown and teacher and Appleby’s Got talent organiser Heidi Trott are all super-impressed

by the acts. “We have had so many entries, I think half the school is trying out,” Heidi says. “The children are designing their own acts and it’s been fantastic - we’ve had singers, pianists, dancers and gymnasts.” Heidi says they have already held two auditions and will be holding the last one this Thursday. The top acts will be chosen for a final and “if the act is fantastic it will be selected to perform at the fair”. The Country Fair will be held at the school grounds on the Moutere Highway on September 6.

Just a thought... By Paul Tregurtha - Waimea Methodist Parish. The appalling events in the Gaza Strip and in Northern Iraq have brought to mind one of Jesus’ most difficult teachings: “love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.” “Yeah right”, I hear you say. TV interviews from Gaza affirmed that: a father saying he would show his son their bombedout house so his son would know the Israelis were his enemies. A young girl paralysed by an Israeli bomb saying she no longer wanted to be a doctor when she grew up but a terrorist. What chance for peace now, you say? And this is the tragedy of war is it not violence begets more violence. But yet it does not have to be that way if adults take responsibility for creating peace. I share with you a Russian story set in 1941 in Moscow where nearly 20,000 German war prisoners were marched in a single column though the streets of Moscow. The pavements swarmed with on-lookers cordoned off by soldiers and police. The on-lookers were mostly Russian women. Every one of them probably had a father or a husband, a brother or a son killed by the Germans. They gazed with hatred in the direction from which the column appeared. The German generals marched at the head, massive chins stuck out, lips folded disdainfully, their whole demeanour meant to show superiority over their victors. The Russian women clenched their fists. The soldiers and policemen struggled to hold them back. But suddenly something happened to them. The women saw German soldiers, thin, unshaven, wearing dirty blood-stained bandages hobbling on crutches or leaning on the shoulders of their comrades; the soldiers walked with their heads down. The street become dead silent. Then an elderly women pushed herself forward. She went up to the German column, took from inside her coat something wrapped in a coloured handkerchief and unfolded it. It was a crust of black bread. She pushed it awkwardly into the pocket of a soldier so exhausted he was teetering on his feet. And then, suddenly, from every side women were running towards the soldiers, pushing into their hands bread, cigarettes, whatever they had. The soldiers were no longer enemies, they were people.

The latest entry in the Car Company Charity Drive, Nelson’s Youth and Community Trust, is gaining a high profile from some of the concerts it is staging for the region’s youth, but there’s much more to the charity than fun and games. The trust was formed in 2002 with the aim of adding value to young people’s lives and helping them achieve their goals. It has helped organise popular alcohol and drug-free musical events and also promotes recreation services for young people by way of The Truck. The trust’s Nelson Underage hit the headlines when they joined forces with Smokefreerockquest to stage the Broods concert at the Theatre Royal in June. The concert was a sell-out and Nelson Underage organiser Nathan Telford is hoping their next event featuring international DJs performing at the Tahunanui Skating Rink on September 27 will be just as popular. “We’ve worked hard, on not only building exciting, safe events that young people want to engage in, but encouraging young people to get involved, taking ownership and making it their own,” Nathan says. “To have a strong DJ lineup, promotions team and sup-

The Truck is also proving to be a big hit taking its mobile recreation facilities which includes a skatepark, basketball hoops and touch and football equipment to schools and sports grounds around Nelson. “We get 100 to 120 teenagers a week at the Truck. We cover the Victory community, the YMCA, Nelson Intermediate, Broadgreen, Stoke Youth and go to Saxton Stadium,” Nathan says. “It’s going very, very well.” But trust manager David Atoa says there’s a serious side to their services because they also provide accommodation and care for at-risk youth. “These teenagers might have come from a situation where

the family has broken down and need a place to stay for two or three days,” David says. David says the Trust is funded by the Nelson City Council as well as from community grants from groups including the Canterbury Community Trust. We have sent a neutral submission to the TDC regarding the dam operating company‘s application for a resource consent to construct the Lee Valley Dam (also known as the Waimea Community Dam) on the following grounds:

There’s nothing that sums up the spring season better than Daffodils. When those beautiful yellow flowers begin to bloom, it’s like a sigh of relief after the stark winter months. The Brightwater Horticultural Society, along with Brightwater School, will soon be welcoming the flowering of 100 new Daffodil plants. The blooms are to be judged at this year’s horticultural show in the Brightwater hall. President of the society, Arch Crerar, says their group wanted to encourage an interest with the local school children to grow plants and thought it would be a great idea to give them each a Daffodil bulb to nurture until the big unveiling at the flower show. A collection of “amazing marine creatures” will be one of the big attractions at a new fishing museum and marine education centre to be established at the Plant and Food Research building on Rocks Road in Nelson. The marine museum is one of five projects on Nelson MP Nick Smith’s to-do-list which he announced at his election campaign launch at the Boathouse last Thursday. The private collection of “hundreds of specimens of seabirds, fish, marine mammals” had been purchased by Peter Talley who last week donated it to the newly formed trust that will manage the museum project. “This new centre is about asserting and celebrating our status as New Zealand’s fishing capital and the largest fishing port in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s the right idea, right time and right place,” Nick says. The centre will also have live fish in aquariums and “a place where children get their hands wet and learn about the marine environment”. It will feature displays of the history of Nelson’s fishing industry “from early Maori to our modern fleet”. “The timing is right because Plant and Food are intending to vacate the heritage powerhouse building

in 2016 as they relocate to their new Port Nelson facilities,” Nick says. “The water intakes, filters, fish tanks and labs are ideal for a marine education centre.” The marine animal collection will be one of the features of the museum and Nick is delighted that Peter has generously gifted it to the trust. The animals, which were preserved by a Whangarei taxidermist and owned by a private collector, were purchased by Peter about 15 years ago, Nick says. “When also Minister of Conservation 15 years ago, I became aware of a private collection up for sale of hundreds of specimen of seabirds, fish, marine mammals and amazing marine creatures beautifully preserved by a Whangarei taxidermist. My officials were worried it would be sold offshore but it was bought by Peter Talley, vested in a trust and has sat in storage,” Nick says. The new trust will be chaired by well-respected Nelson maritime lawyer Peter Dawson. “There is much work to do on a feasibility study, fundraising, securing the building with the city council and developing this concept but I am excited about the potential for this idea to enhance Nelson.”

We organically produce our compost so we do not add anything to it because there is no need. By organically producing it as nature intended, our compost has all the nutrients it needs to give you a healthy productive garden. About 80 cm and dig in to a depth of 150cm.

Federal wins both hockey finals Federal have done the double, winning the division one men’s and women’s hockey championships on the same afternoon. Both teams got the better of Tasman, with the women getting the ball rolling with a 3-2

win at Saxton Field, before Jesse Forsyth scored just seconds before full-time to secure a 2-1 win in the men’s final, after it looked destined for penalties. Coach Craig Brett says it has been a special season for the

club — with both teams winning the Top of the South titles as well. “We’ve won the premier women and the mens so it’s been a big season for us,” he says. “There’s a few trophies coming Federal’s way tonight.”

Pines chase third title

The Richmond Mall Pines headed to Tauranga on Monday, chasing their third national title in as many years. The Nelson Pines have won the Volleyball New Zealand Club Championship twice in the past two years, and while the bulk of the squad remains intact for this week’s competition, coach Colin Redpath isn’t expecting an easy ride. “Our aim is to win it, but the top three or four teams are definitely stronger this year, so we’ll have to be another step up,” he says. Colin says there are many different teams capable of winning the title this year, including perennial favourites Sparta, last year’s finalists Harbour Raiders, and hometown

team Mauao Reds. The Nelson Pines squad is built around New Zealand captain Patrick Shone, who was last year’s MVP, and Ben Glue, who was named best spiker at the tournament last year. Just four of the squad live in Nelson — Patrick, Harry Fergusson, Josh Ovsenek and Teryn Proracki — but most of the others are former Nelson players now living in other parts of the country. The Pines have received huge support from the community, and Colin says they are extremely grateful for the financial contribution of businesses, including major sponsors Richmond Mall, Spittal Development and Bayleys.

it, but it will be a big ask,” he says. “You just need one tough game in pool play and sometimes that can be your campaign over.” The national championship was held in Nelson last year, with Waimea College finishing 11th place, one spot behind Nelson College for Girls, and Mike says the team generally finishes between 10th and 16th place. “It’s probably what we’ve done for the past four or five years.” Nelson College for Girls will be the only other secondary school from the Top of the South at the tournament, and Mike says a secondary goal would be to finish higher than them this year. In Waimea College’s pool are; Pakaranga High School, who are new to the tournament this year, St Peter’s Cambridge, who won it four years ago and reached the top six last year, and Wellington College. There were plenty of unknowns in the group, but the draw is a favourable one. Waimea College will go into the tournament with some strong form. On Saturdays they compete in the Nelson Bays Football women’s league, and finished second place, one spot behind winners FC Nelson. Waimea were close to winning the title, which was decided in the final round. “We’ve had some good, hard games each week and playing against women certainly does help the girls.” Mike says the team’s strength is their depth. All 16 squad players are able to make big contributions, which will be vital during a long week, with games being played everyday. “We are taking away a whole squad of players, this isn’t just a team with a few key players and others making up the rest of the spots.”

Permanent Part Time - Nelson Healthcare Rehabilitation is looking for a reliable male support worker to assist our traumatic brain injured client living in his own home in Nelson. This position is permanent part time working Thursdays from 3pm to 11pm and Sundays from 7am to 3pm, as well as relief shifts to cover annual leave and sick leave from time to time.

You’ll be someone who relates to people from all different backgrounds and cultures - you’ll need resilience, common sense and maturity.

Duties include but are not limited to home help, meal prep, community outings. You must have a current full drivers licence, have NZ residency or a valid NZ work permit.

If you’re a solid communicator, computer literate, and have strong written skills, becoming a Probation Officer could be an excellent career choice for you. You’ll have the chance to connect with people, build strong relationships and do something which really makes a difference and improves public safety.
